Realistically, this is a dumb expectation because Steam is a business and 99% of users want it to just werk. Valve as a company would unironically collapse if they tried to go without the major payment processors.
People who are blaming Steam just already hate Steam. This is simply a natural result of the stranglehold payment processors have on commerce. Steam isn't the first platform they've threatened into submission, and it won't be the last until laws change.
