The routing number method I mentioned CAN be used in that way. It can allow businesses or other entities to issue charges directly to your bank account.
However, it's highly uncommon. 99% of businesses don't even offer it as an option, and I'm not sure what limitations it might have.
The fact that it's so uncommon means that if a business did want to quite using card processors and move to bank withdrawals exclusively, their business would still suffer just like it would if they tried to move to crypto, though it probably wouldn't suffer as much. And even then, they might be at the mercy of the bank.
