I feel like the ideal theory would keep Jumpman and Mario as the same person, Cranky as the original DK and Pauline as "Lady". Any time people say something like "oh Pauline is Lady's daughter/granddaughter" it feels outright wrong, Pauline's WHOLE character is being THE girl DK Kidnapped, saying she is someone else makes Pauline a whole different new character. I do have to admit that Nintendo might be retconning that tho, the whole "I got kidnapped by an ape" thing could just be recontextualized as Void Kong being the kidnapper. Still, would make all the call-backs to the arcade game meaningless...
As far as I am concerned these 3 points have to be true. Cranky has to kidnap a girl called Pauline, Pauline has to grow into the major of New Donk City to Odyssey, all of this has to happen in that order. My best guess is that Void.Co did indeed de-age Pauline, that's why we see her on the street not going to any family, more so, I believe that's great part of the reason she doesn't wear any shoes, her previous shoes are too big for her, just like all the clothes she wears. That would also explain why she is so terrified of DK when they first meet (tho I guess she met Void before so I could be wrong). Pauline, now as a kid, realizes she has been given a second chance to pursue her dream of being a singer. This would also explain why her and Mario are no longer together.
