My personal theory is that these people have no real challenges in life. They grew up mostly privileged, and the school systems taught them that they weren't, unless they were white.
So, the non-whites grew up thinking white people were the enemy and the white people grew up thinking they should feel guilty of something they never had a part in.
This stuff wasn't in schools in the 80s and 90s, but started creeping in the mid 00s. Now, it's why all of this activism and whatnot is taking place in every form of media because the people that grew up with this are making said media.
So, now they finally have something to overcome... an imaginary boogeyman.
