People like Cave Story because it was one of the pioneers of indie games as a whole, while also being a solid game on top of that. You gotta remember that everything in Cave Story (from the art, music and even the engine itself) were all created by ONE guy, which considering its scope was practically unheard of in 2004. The original version of the game being freeware also helps.
