tbf the battletech falling rules are pretty ridiculous. They can fall just from rubble or rocks or tarmac and can fail to stand up and smack back into the ground, and this can happen repeatedly.
A game of battletech with rookie or even basic trained pilots can have some of them just trip over and break their shit trying to stand up, without a single shot being fired. Very quickly you start to think their mechs just fucking suck and they shouldn't be using them at all if they're this clumsy.

That's sort of nu-canon, sort of soft retconned. The old stuff says straight up, neurohelmets are how they interface with them and they move with surprising grace and human motion, with direct mentions of battlemech sporting events. Now they just insinuate it's just a balancing thing. Why do you need to scan a pilots mind to do a gyros job lol
