I've written reviews for multiple outlets before and can tell you definitively that this is, the vast majority of the time, not true. It's ESPECIALLY not true for Nintendo. How retarded do you have to be to think they need 10/10s for people to buy their product? They're one of the most well-known and well-regarded developers in the world, not some small indie studio.
Occasionally, though, a company may stop sending review codes to a particular outlet if that outlet gives one of their games an unfavorable review. This is more common for smaller outlets because it's a lot less conspicuous and companies can get away with it more easily. Why risk some no-name website lowering your Metacritic score when you could just not send them a code and nobody will notice? I know for a fact that Sony does this. Nintendo might as well. Whether you think that constitutes "paid reviews" is up to you (I don't think it does, but it's definitely shitty), but no major developer is sliding outlets cash under the table for positive reviews. I guarantee you that.
