This is not mutually exclusive, the US is liberal land, which means corporations have carte blanche to fuck you over backwards and nothing will happen to them, did you really think the freedom was really for the common man?
Remember that the independence of the US happened during the era when liberalism was the hot topic, so the whole constitution and regulations were designed around free market, that didn't mean the common man had the freedom to evade taxes like rich people or to have freedom of speech in the public square which is property of some random rich dude.
