Colorless is now the "0" color. Before they added basic wastes and the new symbol I would agree with you. But now it's basically the 6th color that WOTC doesn't want to fully commit to, as it'd be a rules nightmare.
OG colorless was truly a lack of color, because ANY deck could cast them, with any land. Now you need special lands that can produce "colorless" symbols, which is no different than needing special lands that can produce "red" symbols.
