Sonic 2 is the normie choice just like Tomb Raider 2, MGS 2, etc were. A game comes out and makes a big splash. The normie reads about it in vidya publications and buys the second one because it seems popular. The other games in the series will never make as big a splash, so they only end up playing that one, while the actual fans and hardcore gamers play them all and settle on the superior part 3 in each case.
