Maybe you've noticed that most of the "competitive" games coming out in the last 5-10 years have launched with a roster of characters/backstories designed to appeal to a certain type of individual.
overwatch launched with some generic lore, because it was just leftover scraps from titan. the game itself was just tf2 with no soul, and an extreme focus on objectives only. the sfm porn saved the game, and they realized they had an entirely different audience than they anticipated - mentally ill tumblrtards who will project whatever retarded fanfic bullshit they can into any ip they get into, regardless of if they play it.
