Weapon trees are still in the game. Body gets shotguns/lmgs, reflex gets ARs/SMGs, etc.
The problem is that they changed all the skills from

>do some active ability to get this situational benefit
Which on paper sounds more engaging, but in practice it means you HAVE to play in a specific way to derive any benefit from skills.
So with shotguns, your capstone skill gives you a damage boost if and only if you melee smack people after shooting them. Your shotgun playstyle basically requires shoot-melee-shoot-melee. Or the SMG capstone is no reloads but you need two SMGs to switch between. There’s just no flexibility in how you actually play because so many skills dictate what you have to do rather than what you can do.
A counterexample is Quake for blunt weapons, which is awesome.
