the schism happened because of small differences between the west and eastern sides of the roman empire (or former parts in the case of the west) over time that culminated in a full schism when the patriarch of constantinople denied the new western customs and as a response the archbishop of rome (ie the pope) demanded to be recognized as the sole head of all the christian churches (which was never the case before) and when the patriarch disagreed he was excommunicated by the pope so then he excommunicated the pope in response, creating the schism
and that's why catholics are the splinter, they were the ones who changed
