GRRM gave up on the ASOIAF books and decided the HBO shows would be his legacy. But the HBO shows turned out to be crap and it's clear they won't have even a shred of cultural longevity of something like LOTR. GRRM even openly started shitting on the latest show on his blog because of how much it shit the bed.
People thought this would motivate him to actually go back and finish the books but he won't. He's probably looking at some other way to be remembered, thinks vidya and movies might be it. But it won't be, he'll forever be remembered as that fat old fantasy guy who never finished his books.
