Blizzard hasn't released an official number since 2015. The current number is based on one guy farting out a number and financials.
The problem with financials is the cash shop (including the WoW token) has done nothing but grow in scope and cash flow for a very long time now. It completely warps the math. The more likely reality is WoW is just another online game propped up by whales.
