That isn't to say that a video game CAN'T be as good or better than a book in terms of characters and story, but that's an incredibly tall order to fill, and something I've yet to experience.
For example, a book series like Dune or Lord of the Rings would be incredibly difficult to adapt into a game without being incredibly boring or not touch on anything that made the books good to begin with.
