The problem with Kris is that Toby is trying way too hard to keep the allusion to Undertale up by making Kris similar to Frisk. I mean fuck, it's even in the name.
Frisk is at least an understandable subversion of the adrogynous self insert character, because it turns out that you are not Frisk, you are "The Player" who happens to control Frisk and it's never been said if Frisk is aware of this or not. Only Flowey and Sans seem to be. Even in Genocide, Flowey sees Frisk as Chara, but not The Player, ever. Chara is aware of TP's existence as soon as Genocide starts given her dialogue.
But the issue lies not in Kris, but the interactions he has: everyone calls Kris by either his name or using "they", when, if he had been living there since childhood, they should VERY well know what gender he is by now, especially since it's established SINCE THE FIRST CHAPTER that YOU are NOT KRIS. Kris is his OWN person. So he HAS an established history, or at least you can infer it. There is no need for the self insert androgyny because now WE, the player, are our own character, The SOUL. But since Toby wants to keep the allusions to UT, he resorts to using "they" to keep this weird illusion alive, even though it's blatantly false, and makes it seem more like Kris is using mentally ill logic which everyone somehow knows, or somehow everyone in town is actually retarded and don't give a shit about Kris to know something as basic as his gender.
TLDR: Toby's retardation and lack of insight led him to a corner he now can't escape without upsetting trannies.
