Its mainly down to what you grow up with when you're younger too. I'm in my early 20s and I'm near sure the first games I played were Hitman and GTA 3, by the 2010s I was on PC playing Battlefield, ARMA 2 and Team Fortress 2 and played all types of shooters from there onwards that had ranges of speeds and playstyles. Some of what I played was genuine shit (well, probably most) but its hard to blame kids or those younger than me for loving more faster paced shooters and wanting a good fast paced shooter when apparently CoD sucks and the rest are full of cheaters.
They'll be disappointed to find out that literally any game in the shooter genre is full of cheaters, but like, they can learn.

>Now everything is the exact same mishmash of visuals and mechanics where you can barely tell games apart
Shooters have always kinda had dumb big budgets for some ungodly reason. CoD: Cold War had $700 Million? The budget for the new Battlefield is $400 million. Granted, these games had some pretty infamous issues in production, but maybe putting 4-5 WHOLE STUDIOS on one FPS game isn't amazing?
And when you put in that much money? Yea, you're gonna have to make it broadly appealing. Gotta get as much of the market in the door as possible. So it has to look like other games. Not the only cause but its a big one.
