if you actually watch old duels of some of the best players they often seem to be unaware of items. I mean, count how few items thresh (best player in the world at the time?) picks up in this POV and how rarely he revisits the same one:

you would think every item is on a 2 minute timer or something. fair enough if they were trying, but they clearly didn't control items in the way zero4 did. even as late as Quake 4 you've got tox running around the map regularly forgetting that items are a thing, at a time when he was the best in the world.
