innovation honestly isn't what's needed. in the past 30 years we've explored the space rather thoroughly but the resulting games have usually been bad. even the best FPS are often very flawed. imo we need actual designers making a game. what the industry does is hire a bunch of enthusiastic engineers and artists and they cobble together some stuff they liked in other games and push it to market half-finished. this is how most games get made so is it any wonder when there are many ideas in the genre that have been executed badly dozens of times and haven't been done right once?
we could have a century of good FPS constructed only out of mechanics already tried before. we don't lack the pieces to the puzzle, we lack the vision to put them together.
