I think you would be shocked by the rat utopia experiment since it attempted to emulate human living conditions (unlimited food, water, housing) for a rat population. And similarly to humans the birthrate eventually flatlined and the rats began engaging in bizarre behavior patterns not seen in nature.
You are right that it is somewhat cultural. We live in an era of selfishness and individuality so there is a pressure against having kids because your average retard percieves children as creatures who steal your free time and ruin your life when you could be having fun pursuing personal interests.
