While I made fun of it back in the day, in hindsight I vastly prefer the smaller hand crafted Skyrim style cities. The fact that you actually bother to know who the people are in the city and remember them adds a lot.
It's not just "oh, that's weapon merchant #5 as indicated by the minimap icon" it's "oh, there's the black chick who's father works in the palace, she sells weapons" and so on. It's not much but it adds a lot.
