Never thought of it that way before but I think I agree. FF2 is unironically the closest point of reference most jrpg fans have to wrpgs in my experience, not even fucking Skyrim (which has an action based leveling system anyways) or anything way more mainstream than that.

I've always thought of SaGa as a fusion of JRPG and WRPG stylings, which I think is ts strength, but I find it hard to disagree that sticking to JRPG labels and conventions are the biggest thing holding it back. Emerald Beyond is one of the most creatively forward thinking games I've ever played, genuinely nothing like it beforehand and I think it's a great direction if it can be refined.
