The strict adherence to 1:1 scale is why level design in each zone was so bad actually, that's why they've never reused the idea. Painted World and Sen's Fortress, the two best areas in the game by a significant margin, were both self-contained using similar level design to Demon's Souls, this is what they then used for Dark Souls III, Sekiro, and Bloodborne.

I guess if you're just a huge fan of metroidvania design, Dark Souls is one of the few games that actually implemented it properly in a 3D space, but it simultaneously highlights the genre's issues.

Personally I wish FromSoft straight up cut like 40% of the game out. It would have made the overall level of quality significantly higher and massively reduced backtracking due to a smaller world in general. Would take it from a 7 5 to an 8.5 or 9.
