I like that even though there are way fewer options as far as weapons and spells go compared to later games each one is pretty unique and can be built to be really strong. Like yeah there's only a few fire sorceries but they're all fucking nuts, either extremely efficient like fire spray or obscenely powerful like firestorm. Extremely powerful self-buffs like Cursed Weapon and Warding enable a spellsword playstyle that none of the other games really capture because they got rid of Warding entirely and replaced it with a much more niche much lower duration Magic Shield spell instead, and weapon buffs in DS1 onwards only really get crazy at high levels while DeS buffs are insane as soon as you get them. Same for Miracles getting unique spells they never brought back like Banish just straight up disconnecting invaders. Overall it feels like they were just focused on making cool and interesting shit while the later games put much more focus on maintaining some sort of balance and the uniqueness of each different option suffered for it.
