Tamers has been doing nothing but tell stories for the past 15+ years. That's more time spent storytelling than some lifetime industry careers.
He understands storytelling at a fundamental level
Characters are not real people. They are a collection of symbols. Archetypes. (pic related is an example of a decent, but imperfect, attempt at mapping human archetypes). In cartoons especially, the visual design of characters very loudly displays the archetypes (often unconsciously).
So when tamers sees a character, he can easily deconstruct and reconstruct them. He plays with the unconscious. He intuitively knows how they flow through a story.
