The majority of games in 2005 are still structurally very different than games today. An open world game was something like Shadow of the Colossus compared to any of the modern ones. You had World of Warcraft which was basically 10 years ahead of every game at release but that was really it.

You can compare Yakuza 1 to a modern beat em up Yakuza and it's still a very different beast even if they share the same foundation. Something like Ys Origin to Ys X is another example. Personally, I think a lot of the modern design philosophies are worse than the older ones but they're still very different. If that wasn't the case, there wouldn't be people preferring older games because they're less padded, don't have mtx, don't hold your hand as much, etc.
