Did you only play normal difficulty? Very Hard and Master Ninja in NGB is very difficult with several bosses that are very defensive and enemies that actively dodge and block.
NG3RE also have enemies that are crazy defensive, constantly blocking and dodging and you have to cut them up first to bloody them to open them up to getting combo'd
