It kickstarted the rouglike/rouglite era with 100s of clones because it was a well made and well designed game, the devs go over this and on thing i remember them saying is that they nuked any card that would stall the game, so you're either winning or losing, no stalling and time wasting which although sounds simple is amazing because alot of turn based games fall into the trap of wasting your time on meaningless shit.
unfortunately all the games that copied it did so without adding anything of value with few exceptions, the most egregious example of that being DD2
