A remake made by the original devs like the RE1 remake or a remake that totally reimagines every part of the game down to the core gameplay like RE2.
Something that's just visual and rapes the original art like the Demon's Souls remake or completely rapes the art of the original without offering anything new like the Silent Hill 2 remake have no point to exist.
I think it also really comes down to the preservation of the originals. The original RE games are readily available on GOG. But the original Demon's Souls can't be bought anywhere and you need fan servers to play online, and neither can the original Silent Hill 2. I'm more willing to put up with remakes as long as the original is preserved. I fucking despise the time jannies in FF7R but at least the original game is preserved on modern stores.
Then there's the odd remake that feels like it was made specifically as a way for people who played the original to play it again like the FF4 Remake on DS. I think RE1 remake fits in that category too because it has elements that play with the design of the original and reference them too
