it's only as complicated as you make it. making a safe and sustainable fort is actually not hard at all.

>plant some crops
>build a wall
and you're safe indefinitely, unless you find other problems which is the fun part. like making it into a trade hub or whatever and dealing with everything that comes from that, elves ODing in your taverns and humans trying to steal your artifacts

but the game lets you do really deep and complicated things if you want.
