The piss poor static contrast of IPS is the real horseman. The only technology that manages to go over 1000:1 is IPS Black by Dell - an expensive technology that no one else uses, and it's stuck at 120Hz. FALD isn't really a very good compromise because, due to the fact that the static contrast is so SHIT, you'll be able to easily see the halo effects in multiple areas of the monitor. Obviously this depends on the scene, but look at a bunch of bright stars in a very dark sky and you'll see the halo effect with ease even with over 1000 zones.

Regarding VA panels, "Fast VA" panels, as they are advertised" are actually pretty good. They are still glacially slow when looking at very dark areas, such as panning a camera when looking at leaves during a dark night, but are overall really nice. Excelent colors, no blooming, much better viewing angles than TN - not as perfect as IPS but I doubt you'll notice the gamma shifting - the halo effect is very dim due to the very high static contrast so they pair wonders with FALD, and they are actually pretty damn fast in bright scenes. A good example would be Overwatch. in which they are about as fast as the typical IPS.
