Spore fell by the wayside in memory but it's criminal how much they fucked up something that could have been as seismic as The Sims was.

Half life 2 and I disagree. Half life 1 and I would agree. Half life 1 was novel for having the most threadbare of plots at the time when shooters either had none or they were comically silly plots. The gunplay isn't anything special. It was valuable for mods and map making - INCREDIBLY INVALUABLE for that, but if that didn't exist it'd be a "Oh yeah that game existed" memory.
It doesn't deserve hatred though, there's nothing bad about it it just wasn't some exceptional thing.
