Valve only makes money when people open crates or buy/sell via the steam market.
If people are buying/trading guns outside of the steam market, they get $0 per transaction, even if a gun/knife has a "value" of $10,000.
While this drives down the price of knives and gloves and shit, it makes it so way more players are willing to engage in the steamconomy end of it instead of the knifeconomy via gambling sites and shit.
Valve makes way more money off knives being $50 from way more frequent marketplace participation.
