There's a clear degree of separation there. Mario and Luigi don't interact with the cast directly, and you could easily just replace them with Kirby audience members. The statue is mainly a visual gag without any bearing to actual characters.
Even then, this was mainly just one specific game Sakurai directed where he did this. It seemed more like him being cheeky than anything.
