The "style" itself can't be copyrighted, but specific elements that compose that style can.
The whole patent shit is petty as fuck, there's no reason for Nintendo to be going through this, it just serves to paint them as "the villain".
And worse, they can lose this shit for no benefit whatsoever.
It's so frustrating.
