From what I understood some units are considered "marine" units, and get bonuses (or maybe just do not get penalties) when fighting at sea.
ALL Nord units count as Marine units. NONE of the Khuzait units count as Marine units. Other factions have some specialized unit trees like that, but we don't know how many.

I forget where I read it, maybe it was in one of the Q&A, but I doubt that's going to be the case. I remember then saying that marine units are generally lighter armoured than regular troops, so I imagine Nords in general might suffer from weak defences.
