You don't have to be obsessed with a game to talk about it in any length. Some RPGs for example can be pretty in depth, so there's room for discussing a lot. If a game has a focus on story that can also motivate talk. Or if a game is a part of a larger series, that can prompt comparisons, or rankings, talking about similar games, etc. Also as time passes people change their minds, and new people join in the discussion. Bringing up some eceleb or some off-site drama for the 500th time looks like the obsessive behavior to me.
