A multiplayer game with any nuance really can't help but throw you in the deep end, because they're not built around learning curves unless the opposing player is the one trying to teach, but a single player game doesn't really have the same excuse if it's not intended to be a simulator that's complicated enough to require a manual.
The fact that your actions are translated from inputs through game rules automatically in a videogame means that you should be able to quickly learn what does what just by seeing if your inputs do anything. Being dropped into a situation where the outcome of your inputs appears random or non-functional just leads to learned helplessness and quitting the game because it's just "too complicated".
