>Squeenix has been struggling to even grasp the identity of the franchise since then
This is the most confusing shit. How do you fail to grasp the identity of a franchise as simple as FF? Magitek setting that's whimsical and fun to explore, but has a hidden darkness behind it, and a group of plucky characters, unlikely allies brought together by a common purpose that starts small, but eventually escalates to battling a god-like entity that threatens the world. Throw in a waifu with the power of destiny, turn-based combat, summons, and you have your game. Hell, be fancy and build on FFX/FFX-2 and have a really juicy end-/postgame that tests your understanding of the game's mechanics for some extra longevity.
