Ian thinks he knows better even though he doesn't do proper research. To him, everyone else's ideas are bad while his are good. He's egotistical like Penders who also didn't look at other people's work when he wrote, but the difference is Ian tries to feign persona of being humble and down-to-earth while Penders doesn't think he needs to pretend because he believes there's nothing wrong with his behavior.
