I agree. I actually loved Destiny 1 (dumped about 3k hours into it) and played a lot of Destiny 2 (nothing close to D1 though).
The story of Titan is that it was supposed to be a successor to WoW and potentially replace WoW. WoW was only a few years old at the time and they had no idea how long MMOs would be able to last and how long the expansion cycle would work. Other developers were also working on sci-fi dream projects, Jagex had Stellar Dawn as an example, so Blizzard wasn't alone with these concerns.
The thing is Bungie started ACTUALLY DEVELOPING Destiny at the same time that Titan was in the concepts and brainstorming phase. Activision "partnered" (bought) Blizzard the next year and Kaplan was given a ton of cash and a team to build Titan. So Kaplan and Team 4 are prancing along working on their project that's not supposed to happen until like 2015 and all is well.
That was until... not long after Acti+Blizz officially happened that Bungie started throwing out feelers for being purchased by another publisher. Microsoft wanted them to keep working on Halo forever. It makes sense, Halo was by far the biggest and most defining IP in the shooter genre at the time. It was an international phenomenon. Bungie, unbeknownst to M$'s execs, had been working on Destiny for a couple years already at that point. They agreed to toss out a quick Halo title with existing assets, used some Destiny tech (enter Reach abilities) to freshen up the game, and put themselves on the market.
ActiBlizz bought them and suddenly there's an MMO shooter that's already been in development for THREE WHOLE YEARS sitting right next door to Kaplan's arts and crafts Titan project.
Right after the Bungie acquisition ActiBlizz approached Kaplan, told him that Titan was off the table, and that Destiny is both way bigger and further along that Titan will be in the foreseeable future. Destiny went on to release two whole years prior to Overwatch.
