You can use any made up reason to justify duels. Like 1 person's stellar battle performance tripping the island's security and trapping them in a 1v1 high threat level elimination fight. Afterwards you could say the magicks dispersed and that's why everyone around you powers up. Not that I want duels, but you can just make shit up
