Given that Pepsi was starting to win over the general populace at the time they most likely figured better than Pepsi would also mean better than Old Coke.
Plus these are the same people who convinced the world the Red Suited Fat Man was Santa and that used WWII to help set up shop globally, they had experience with it before.
