There's a big schizo google doc going around putting everything that could be connected to FRIEND together.
The important part is that FRIEND shows up throughout the adventure, but more often around the Shadow Crystal stuff. And it seems to be tied to glitches, cats and the Dark itself.
There's also many things in the game pointing to the idea of a "pointed tail" that misleads, like full on devil imagery. This gets tied to FRIEND as well for some reason.
I'm postulating that FRIEND is some kind of demonic entity in the Dark that approached Dess using a form similar to her old childhood doll, Seam, and offered her company and eventually power and a plan for FREEDOM.
