SA 1&2 at least gave knuckles a good reason to run around, since the master emerald was shattered across the world.
They sort of half set him up as the manager of the chaos emeralds too, but dropped that plot point. It would have gave him a good excuse to be off angel island in future games, but now he's kind of just there anyways, like blaze or sliver.
