I'd say even going back to 1.18 when Yoshi-p took over and how much the game improved up to 1.23 was a really good sign, even though the game itself wasn't "good" or something you'd tell friends to pick up and play.
Some things in 2.0 still disappointed me, but for years there was this sense that the game was only getting better. They did miss a lot, but also got a lot right more often than not, and they used to do some things that are unthinkable today.
With the Alexander raids, they turned the ship around after the aboslute disaster that was Gordias, and improved something broken long before the next expansion. It's a stark and depressing contrast with something like Criterion, which got feedback right away with 6.25, tnothing changed with the second one in 6.45, and the third one in 6.51 got the glowy tome weapons as a response, which wasn't nearly enough and was for savage only.
