correct, but the romans came out of nowhere and dominated the mediterranean which fits the moderness of the american accent. the romans also famously were super insecure about their own culture due to how recent it was while at the same time viewing themselves as salt of the earth people when compared to the supposedly overly fancy and pretentious greeks, which i think fits the american accent super well and could be contrasted well with a british greek accent. to do something even funnier you could have the upper class romans with a transatlantic accent to showcase how that class desperately wanted to imitate the greeks and their culture. ultimately i agree in a perfect world they'd just do actual latin, it's not like it's some lost language, it was even spoken actively by people until just 100 years ago.
