There's a port of Mother 1&2 to the GBA, which has a fan translation patch for the Mother 1 half, that's the best way to play Mother 1/Earthbound Beginnings. The official translation is lower quality. The GBA port has QOL improvements over the NES original.
For Earthbound/Mother 2, just play the official SNES version. Mother 3 is on the GBA and has a high quality fan translation.
I recommend using emulators for all three. You can easily find ROMs on the Internet Archive, last time I checked. I don't recommend skipping Mother 1/Earthbound Beginnings, because it sets up story content in Earthbound, but if you find the retro aspects too frustrating after giving it a chance, just drop it and play Earthbound instead.
