I get what they're trying to do by having fire to do most of its damage based on the surface area of what's being lit on fire, but I can see why that would feel bad from a gameplay standpoint considering how flamethrowers in video games tend to be chaff clearing damage hoses with a little bit of fire DoT.
That being said, I don't actually know enough about real flamethrowers to know what the difference in temperature between the original stream and the lingering flames would be, or how that would translate to actual damage numbers.
